Title: ATTN: dRO!

mrgogogas - December 31, 2007 01:35 AM (GMT)
My 2-month old computer's been slowing down recently, so I decided to go and install a decent antivirus software on it.

Uh-huh.

Guess what I found?

The GameGuard that was used in the old, old OLD dRO contains Obfustat.jxm.

Meaning... it's a trojan horse.

(I also found a bunch of other ones, but that's another story. Most of them are from keygens from my luuuurvley pirating habits.)

So... go and delete the file GameGuard.des from your GameGuard directory (if you have it) and then live a nice and happy life from there onwards.

Thanks for the heads-up to everyone.

There were some old reports of a trojan in the RO download ages ago, I guess one got by my checks and made it to the dRO download page at some point.

Hope anyone affected can fix it easily

GameGuard in ALL MMOs contains viruses. Name any MMO with GameGuard, and I've probably gotten viruses from it.

This is true. The Lineage 2 gameguard comes up as a virus. I just ignore it since thats it does that from a fresh instal from the disk.

Virus detection doesn't like game protection :P

Not to worry folks, I believe it's a false-positive. Virsuses or malware in general are applications that modify or spy on your computer for any changes. Let's take gameguard for example... What gameguard does (I think) is that it takes a look at a list of applications that are open, and verifies whether or not it automates any action, such as mouse or keyboard movements. It also checks for program hex modifications etc... Now take a spyware trojan that monitors keyboard and mouse activity and verifies when you are on a secure website so they can keylog your personal information.

The difference between the two? Gameguard is a much stronger app, and is spyware by technicalities. However it is not stealing information from you in a bad way. So in the end you get a false-positive result.

This is probably not the right answer to why there was a trojan but it's possible.
